Lots to be thankful for

I have a lot to be thankful for this year as it has been both impossibly difficult and remarkably fruitful. A large portion of my gratitude goes to the kindness of total strangers, who have transformed my world over the past 9 months, and the rest can be attributed to the strong shoulders of close family and sweet friends onto which I have leaned. Thank you all, my unnamed warriors.

At the start of 2012 I half jokingly claimed this to be my year – the year of the Dragon, and indeed it has been! It came with a thunderous reckoning! But it ain’t over till the fat lady delivers a heart-stopping vocal bravado (which will be me after the holidays *sob* goodbye waistline *sob*). And I have enough fight left to deliver some spectacular new projects in the next few weeks.

Honestly, I’m just glad to have power again. Hurricane Sandy left a total disaster zone and commuter hell. Storm Support is making an effort to give back to storm victims through great design! ALL profits from sales go to benefit various charities around the NYC/NJ area and will directly help those in need. My contribution is a cute lil’ french bulldog Storm Pup – go get him!

Most importantly, I hope that you are enjoying the best damn Thanksgiving meal of your life today (or at least, one worthy to be a close second).

Happy Holidays! Lets not lose our minds over Black Friday deals, mmkay?

MASKS ARE IN!

I’M SO EXCITED!

FALL, my favorite season, ART, my favorite activity, and MASKS, my favorite accessory have merged together! *Cackles, thunder & lightning* Ok, ok. So last year I was a little late on the whole Halloween-merch-bandwagon, but this year, oh no! This year, I have illustrated and designed an entire heap of masks for people of all ages and eclectic personalities to wear!

There are several hilarious characters to choose from thus far:

  1. Cthulhu (shout-out to H. P. Lovecraft; recently on South Park)
  2. Shark Attack (every surfer’s worst nightmare)
  3. Eyeball (…pretty effin’ weird…)
  4. Frankenstein (zombie apocalypse is upon us!)
  5. Skull (morbid with a sense of humor)

The best part about these creepy, toothy, bloody, funny, weirdos? They are super duper comfortable! Say good-bye to that awful rubbery smell-of-death circa whenever rubber silicon masks were first created. These fellas are made of 100% baby soft organic cotton knit! So they’re gentle and stretchy and fit properly over the ol’ noodle, no matter the size of one’s big sexy brain. Also, they are like the best deal ever! Original, one of a kind, limited edition, and will solve all of your pesky costume-getting problems come Halloween. Just between you and me, it would be totally cool to wear them in the winter as ski masks (HINT).

I’m so proud of these creepy head dudes and it makes me thrilled to offer them to you, THE PEOPLE. Keep your eyes peeled for even more masks to surface before Halloween (not to start any rumors, but I’ve got a plethora of ideas floating around). The best place to find out any new intrigue, would be to follow me on instagram or twitter – @torynova. If you’d like to stock these masks in your store or know of a place where they really ought to be available, let me know and I will make it happen. Yes. Just like that.

The Fox, The Owl, and the Polar Bear

Deck the Halls with Handmade Items!
(Support local artisans; buy “Handmade” this holiday season!)

This holiday season is just as busy as any other (what economic crisis?) with so many presents and holiday greetings to create! My list just keep getting longer. In-between all of that, it’s tough to squeeze out any creativity, but thankfully I’ve been concocting creations for a while and can finally post s0me here. And I have to apologize, it seems like the time between my updates is exponentially growing.

I’m itching for big fluffy flakes to reappear in the sky. Last winter the snow seemed endless and now in December it feels completely out of reach in NYC. It’s cold but alas, no snow! In-between shivers I’ve been working on some fabric designs. They’ve evolved into a small set of sweet fleece scarves (and may turn into more creations later).

The Forest Fox

The Night Owl

The Arctic Bear

I’m in love with each color palette and its respective animal:

Fox ~ Always bonkers for foxes (my first childhood love) but the print truly gives the animal a just habitat to play in – beautiful rusty oranges and red melding together with olive branches and leaves. The black painterly strokes also keep each creature looking wild and perhaps even wise from certain angles.

Owl ~ The owls are incredibly pleasant to wear because the colors are harmonious with denim and dark clothing (typical trend for winter) so they can be worn in a wrapped cowl or mini knot under any color coat with jeans. The fleece fabric is very friendly and warm so it is perfect for handmade scarves.

Bear ~ And frankly, who doesn’t love polar bears? The spot with the sleeping mother and cub bear warms my frigid heart. The geometric ice crystals are a nice contrast to the natural shapes of the animals. This scarf’s colors are muted grey teals. It’s actually very refreshingly beautiful and not too overtly “girly.”

Each scarf is sold in my Etsy shop, along with a variety of other cute handmade jewelry. Check it out!

Christmas PJs

NEIMAN MARCUS has officially started selling my 12 Days of Christmas book set with Books to Bed, online and in stores. Time to start the holiday shopping frenzy for your little rascals!!

Tis the Pajama Season!

This summer I finished my 2nd children’s book with Books to Bed. It’s titled as 12 Days of Christmas and it interprets the old Christmas carol in a more modern light, reflecting what 21st century kids would get as presents. The writing still mimics the same sing-song rhyming and is in the perspective of a little boy and girl, who are counting out the gifts sent to them by friends and relatives. With every turned page the illustrations get more and more hectic as different toys come alive to play.

The book is sold with a matching boys and girls pajama set in different retail locations. Books to Bed not only caters to small boutiques but their pajamas are also frequently sold in Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave, Barney’s New York, and Nordstrom. I was lucky enough to see my previous book “Cinderella” in the Barney’s New York store in the city on Madison ave – which was awesome!

The above image is from the Neiman Marcus online store. So far I’ve only found a few store links to them online but more will surely follow a little closer to the holidays. Books to Bed has actually had a pretty lucky streak all of last year around the holiday season because their sets have been featured on both The View and on the Rachael Ray show.

Recently a photo has been circulated to me from a client of B2B. It’s of the pj setup in their storefront – if you look closely, my pink Cinderella book and pajamas are right in the front-left! I never imagined myself to be gracing a storefront – at least not as a little girl’s perfectly pink book. Lets scratch that off the “Things to do before I’m 23” list. =D
